#PlasticFreeJuly – Take Action in Your Community
Welcome to Plastic Free July! Thank you for taking the pledge to avoid disposable plastic and to take action for a future without plastic pollution. This post archives the third weekly email to Plastic Free July participants. We offered some ideas to help your community break free from plastic:
- Ask your local coffee shop or grocery store to put up signs reminding people to bring their reusable mugs and bags. We created a couple free signs that you can download from our website to print at home and give to businesses in your community.
- Work with local bars and restaurants to get them to stop using straws. You can also take action with our partners at the Plastic Pollution Coalition, which is calling on the fast food chain In-N-Out to ditch plastic straws at all their locations.
- Identify a group or location in your community using or selling bottled water, and help them find a waste-free solution. Maybe your kid’s soccer team hands out bottled water; talk to the coach about getting a refillable water jug and compostable paper cups instead.
- Pass a ban or fee on plastic bags or styrofoam. Start by checking if there’s a plastic ordinance in your community. If not, you can take the lead to get one passed! Our friends at the Surfrider Foundation have a great step-by-step guide on how to go about it.
When it comes to creating a future without plastic pollution, eliminating plastic from your own life is a great place to start – but a terrible place to stop. To solve such a big problem, we need to take big actions. When you take Citizen Muscle actions in your community, you’re amplifying your impact and helping to build a better system. Thanks for being part of the solution!
