All Hands on Deck! How We’ll Move Forward in 2017
It goes without saying that 2016 has been a year we won’t soon forget!
But with a New Year on the horizon, rather than focus on what’s wrong, I’m focused instead on what’s possible.
Yes, there are many struggles looming. We’ll have to fight like heck to protect the environment and the most vulnerable among us, here in the U.S. and wherever you live as well. But think how much stronger our global Community of changemakers will become, and the game-changing Solutions we’ll create, by working together!
We know you’re capable of big things, because in 2016, a year with so many setbacks, we:
- Saved millions of gallons of our water by fighting Nestlé’s water grabs from the San Bernardino National Forest to the Great Lakes and many places in between;
- Stopped hundreds of millions of plastic bags from trashing our lakes and oceans by successfully defending California’s historic statewide plastic bag ban; and
- Preserved our forests and rivers by keeping millions of wasteful catalogs and other junk mail out of our mailboxes, and landfills, through our Catalog Choice platform.
Here at the Story of Stuff Project, we have three main priorities for the coming year:
First, we’ll continue to tell great stories, because despite what the past year has shown, understanding the world around us really does matter!
We’re excited to announce that we’ll be creating and releasing our first big movie in several years—The Story of Plastic—in collaboration with our partners in #BreakFreeFromPlastic, a global movement to solve plastic pollution. We’re ready to get to work in January crafting what will be our most groundbreaking media project since the original Story of Stuff. Stay tuned!
We’ll also continue to share the stories of everyday heroes making change in their communities and profile the exciting innovations driving positive environmental and social change. We call this series Growing Solutions and, if you’re anything like me, you could use a positive story right now!
Second, we’ll be doubling down on our campaigning, working with our partners and Community members like you on our top priorities—stopping plastic pollution and protecting public water resources—as well as defending defend clean water, clean air, public lands and workers’ rights against attempts to turn back the clock in Washington, D.C. and elsewhere.
And finally, because we’ve always believed change comes from the grassroots, we’ll be redoubling our support for local campaigns and projects—maybe even one you dream up! We’ll be launching a grassroots grants program to provide funding to local groups protecting public water resources from privatizers like Néstle. And we’ll be providing additional strategic, legal and volunteer support to our local partners. With you, we’ll throw our support behind the idea generators and changemakers charting a path out of these dark times.
My promise to you is that we will continue to do everything in our power to inspire and equip you to flex your citizen muscles in the year ahead.
Thank you and Happy New Year!
